Thank you social skills groups everywhere. Part 1
I recently spoke about the time in our journey when I finally came across a social skills group for our son. After a difficult year in Kindergarten mostly due to his communication challenges, I was in a good news-bad news situation. Leading into the summer after Kindergarten, I was so excited to find a place that would help him learn how to communicate with his peers and learn about non-verbal communication which turns out is an ability that I took for granted. The place that provided a two-week camp for social skills development with a group of peers his age did not have plans for a program during the school year. The two weeks he spent with them was wonderful. To see him with peers that had the same struggles made me feel like we were not alone. To watch him learn with guidance from the instructor how to play with others was such a joy. Even though it was a bit of a drive, when she asked if I wanted to be put on a wait list for a bi-weekly group session, I jumped at the opportunity to keep him involved. Sadly, the call never came. She did not get enough interest to develop a group for his age. So, we kept all our notes from the camp and tried to incorporate the information into his daily interactions when the opportunity arose and first grade came and went. My search would need to continue and it did.
